1. Jia Zhangke: Filmmaker in Residence - Berkeley - BAMPFA
One of the world's foremost filmmakers, Jia Zhangke, joins us for a weeklong residency during which he will engage in conversations with leading experts.
“One of the most important filmmakers in the world today.” —National Public Radio When Jia Zhangke (born 1970) visited SFMOMA and BAMPFA for a whirlwind trip in February 2019, we extended an invitation to him to return to UC Berkeley and participate in a filmmaker residency that would allow Bay Area filmgoers and the campus community an opportunity to hear him speak about his films over the course of a week. We are delighted that this visit will occur on November 7–13, with Jia participating in a series of onstage conversations.

In 2006, Still Life won the Golden Lion at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival. Jia Zhang-Ke received the Leopard of Honor of the 63rd Festival del film Locarno in 2010. In 2013, he won the award for Best Screenplay at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. In 2015, Jia Zhang-ke was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award Carrosse d’Or (Golden Coach) at the Cannes International Film Festival.In 2017 he initiated Pingyao International Film Festival with the aim to promote works from young directors and to enhance the communication between Chinese and international filmmakers. In 2019, he founded Lüliang Literature Festival in the village, bringing the literature and reading atmosphere into rural community.

In 2008, I saw Jia Zhangke’s film Still Life, and it changed my life. I had never seen a film that had affected me so intensely and knew that, after that moment, I needed to research this director and his films further. What impacted me the most about Jia’s films were their emotional and affective qualities, and how they evoked feelings that lingered long after the films had ended.
